Animal sexuality is a topic full of mysteries and sometimes taboo. Among the questions that experts have tried to answer is: do homosexual animals exist in nature when the purpose of the species is to reproduce in order to provide offspring?
Media interview RawFleur Dauger, an ethologist who studies this behavior, said: “It’s seen in 1,500 species and has been scientifically studied in 500 species.”. Thus, homosexuality among wild animals would be fairly common, and some animals would even prefer to have homosexual relationships rather than relationships with individuals of the opposite sex, even if they had a choice. According to the expert, most animals are not strictly homosexual or heterosexual, but rather bisexual.
These same-sex relationships do not stop at the sexual aspect, as same-sex parenting has already been observed in several species. Here are six examples of species in which homosexuality and/or same-sex parenting have been documented:
Among the animal species very popular with the general public is the gray dolphin, also called the common dolphin. These large social mammals live in groups. There are frequent cases of homosexuality, both between men and between women. Some pairings even last a lifetime (dolphins have a lifespan of about 60 years, so they can form very long pairings!).

Australian black swan
Here is an example of a successful same-sex rearing of an Australian black swan. In this species, pairs of males collect abandoned eggs. They then hatch them, then take care of the cubs. Their reproductive success is often higher than that of a heterosexual couple. Reason: In this species, it is males who control territories. Thus, a pair of two males has a much larger territory, which means more food for their offspring.

Bonobo is one of our closest relatives. This primate shares 98.7% of its DNA with humans. Apart from this genetic closeness, this species is known for its unbridled sexuality. Sex is used to relieve tension between group members. Monkeys masturbate and have frequent sexual intercourse without any reproductive intentions. Sex between a male and a female or individuals of the same sex solves all problems among bonobos! They are adherents of “companion sex”, the purpose of which is primarily social. These matings are meant to resolve conflicts, such as by appeasing an aggressive person or if a rivalry breaks out between two members of the community.
⋙ According to a study, young bonobos experience a lot of stress due to the appearance of brothers and sisters.
Like the Australian black swans, penguins have been known to enter into same-sex relationships and raise their young. Many cases have been reported in zoos and in the wild. Penguins, being faithful animals, are among the animals that remain in pairs all their lives, which is very rare in the animal kingdom.
It should be noted that penguins are also among the species where, even in heterosexual couples, caring fathers raise their cubs.

Even the king of beasts can engage in same-sex relationships. Scientists report that 8% of sexual acts in lions are homosexual. On the other hand, lionesses behave like lesbians only in captivity.
Giraffes are known for their impressive size. But did you know that these giantesses are bisexual? According to biologist Günther Strauss, 90% of observed activities are homosexual in certain groups.
